Beamline Equipment Protection System (BLEPS)

BLEPS (Beamline Equipment Protection System) is the PLC-based safety and interlock system used at the APS to protect beamline hardware — optics, vacuum components, water-cooled stops — from physical damage during user experiments. It continuously monitors the operating state of every protected component and, if any of them deviates from its safe envelope, either warns staff or trips a Fault condition that automatically closes the main beamline shutters to block the X-ray beam.

BLEPS protects equipment; the Personnel Safety System (PSS) protects people. The two are distinct but cooperate — a BLEPS fault asks the PSS-controlled shutter chain to close. PSS is the authoritative safety layer for people-in-hutch interlocks; BLEPS is the layer between PSS and the wear-and-tear of the hardware.

What BLEPS monitors

Typical quantities continuously read by the PLC and compared against component-specific limits:

  • Water flow on every water-cooled element (mirror, DMM, slits, filters, white-beam stops, beam-defining masks).

  • Vacuum pressure at every gauge along the front end and the beamline transport.

  • Component temperatures (thermocouples on optics, mirror tank, monochromator crystals, etc.).

  • Position / state of valves, masks, and shutters relevant to equipment protection (gate-valve open/closed, mask in/out).

Each input has a Warning threshold (notify staff, scan continues) and a Fault threshold (close shutters, latch the fault until manually cleared).

Response to a fault

When a Fault threshold is crossed, BLEPS:

  1. Latches the fault on the PLC and propagates it to the PSS shutter chain.

  2. Closes the main 2-BM beamline shutters — the A-shutter (front-end) and the P6-50 safety shutter / B_shutter further downstream — to block the X-ray beam. See the per-shutter blocks in Beamline components for PV names and command surfaces.

  3. Surfaces the latched fault on the BLEPS MEDM / operator screen so staff can identify the root cause before clearing.

The fault is latched — the shutters do not re-open automatically when the offending parameter returns to normal. A staff member must verify the underlying condition, acknowledge the fault on the BLEPS panel, and then re-arm the shutter chain.

2-BM implementation

The full 2-BM-specific BLEPS implementation — interlock matrix (which inputs trip which outputs), PLC programme, MEDM screens, fault-recovery procedure — is documented in:

2-BM BLEPS implementation.

That document is the source of truth for the 2-BM interlock configuration. This page is the conceptual overview only.

Physical assignments at 2-BM

The Excel transfer table refers to the gate valves, mirror thermocouples and water-flow loops only by numeric index (GV1/GV2/GV3, Temp1/Temp2/Temp3, Flow1..``Flow8``). The physical device each index refers to is configured in the PLC and is not stored in the transfer table — it is read off the 2 BMBLEPS Allen-Bradley operator panel, which surfaces Flow1-Flow5 / Temp1-Temp3 / GV1 / GV2 on the Station A page and Flow6-Flow8 / GV3 on the Station B page. The mapping below is taken from those screens.

Gate valves — location in beam direction

Tag

Physical location

GV1

Between the upstream Slits (downstream of the BIV) and the M1 mirror tank. Isolates the mirror tank from the front-end side.

GV2

Between Windows 2 & 3 (downstream end of the Station A optics enclosure) and the SBS (Station B Shutter). Isolates the Station A optics enclosure from the transport to Station B.

GV3

Between the transport pipe coming from Station A and the Station B optics (Station B entrance slits and Window 4). Isolates Station B from the transport.

Mirror tank thermocouples

All three Temp channels are thermocouples on the M1 mirror tank; the index maps top-to-bottom on the tank:

EPICS IOC

The 2-BM BLEPS PLC surfaces its state to EPICS via a soft IOC running on the beamline server arcturus under the 2bmb account. Every 2bmBLEPS: PV documented in the inventory below comes from this IOC.

Deployment

IOC directory:

/net/s2dserv/xorApps/epics/synApps_6_3/ioc/2bmBLEPS

Host:

arcturus

Account:

2bmb

PV prefix:

2bmBLEPS: (BLEPS-domain PVs live under 2bmBLEPS:BLEPS:*)

Framework:

synApps 6.3 — standard iocBoot/ + 2bmBLEPSApp/ layout, with 2bmBLEPSApp/op/ui holding the caQtDM screens.

PV count:

599 total — 385 in the BLEPS domain, 214 IOC-admin (heartbeat / CA statistics from iocAdminSoft).

Starting the IOC

The IOC is a synApps soft IOC. Two equivalent ways to start it.

Via the wrapper script (recommended — opens a new gnome-terminal tab and follows the beamline convention of one tab per running IOC):

~/bin/bleps_IOC.sh

The wrapper ssh’s to 2bmb@arcturus and invokes the softioc launcher.

Directly (when logged in as 2bmb@arcturus):

cd /net/s2dserv/xorApps/epics/synApps_6_3/ioc/2bmBLEPS/iocBoot/ioc2bmBLEPS/softioc
./2bmBLEPS.pl run

The IOC runs in the foreground of that terminal and prints its startup output. Leave the terminal open for the duration of the session; closing it kills the IOC.

Stopping the IOC

Two equivalent ways.

Via the wrapper script:

~/bin/bleps_IOC_stop.sh

which calls kill_IOC.sh 2bmBLEPS on arcturus.

Directly (as 2bmb@arcturus):

kill_IOC.sh 2bmBLEPS

Or, from the IOC’s own terminal, Ctrl-C.

MEDM status summary

The bleps_status.adl screen (see figure below) shows the operationally-relevant BLEPS state on a single page. It is the day-to-day interface for on-shift operators.

Launch it with:

medm -x -macro "P=2bmBLEPS:" /home/beams/2BMB/bin/bleps_status.adl
BLEPS status summary (MEDM, bleps_status.adl)

The figure above shows the running screen with a real snapshot of the beamline. Reading top to bottom, left to right:

Top row — ALARMS + SHUTTERS. Grey / coloured indicators for FAULT (grey when clear, red when latched), TRIP (grey / orange), WARNING (grey / yellow), and the BIV / FES / SBS shutter states (green = open, red = closed). Two message-button widgets — Reset FAULT and Reset TRIP — write 1 to A_FAULT_RESET / TRIP_RESET respectively. These clear the corresponding latches on the PLC; the underlying condition must have cleared first or the latch immediately re-arms. There is no dedicated WARNING_RESET PV — latched warnings can only be cleared by the physical BLEPS panel button (or, in some PLC configurations, by A_FAULT_RESET cascading).

Gate valves. GV1 / GV2 / GV3 open / closed limit-switch readbacks, labelled with the physical location each isolates (Slits ↔ M1, Windows 2&3 ↔ SBS, Transport ↔ Station B).

M1 mirror tank temperatures. Three thermocouple readings (TEMP1..``TEMP3``, lower / middle / upper on the tank) with their trip-high limits. A fault is raised when the reading rises above the setpoint.

Cooling water flows. Eight flow readings (FLOW1..``FLOW8``) with their trip-floor setpoints, labelled with the cooled components (filter/slits, M1/DMM, Window 1 & Missteer Mask, Windows 2&3, White Beam Mask / SBS Shutter, Station B slits, Window 4, Station B Photon Stop). A fault is raised when the reading falls below the setpoint.

Vacuum monitoring. Seven ion-pump indicators (IP1..``IP7``) and eight ion-gauge indicators (IG1..``IG8``) as compact coloured boxes. Three-state colouring:

  • greenIPx_STATUS / IGx_STATUS = GOOD and no warning latched (all clear).

  • yellow — device recovered, but IPx_WARNING / IGx_WARNING is still latched (needs a reset).

  • red_STATUS = BAD right now (overrides yellow).

In the screenshot, IP2 and the odd-numbered ion gauges IG1 / IG3 / IG5 / IG7 show red — four odd-numbered channels being simultaneously BAD usually points to a common controller-side issue rather than four independent failures, and is worth investigating on the physical side.

IOC row (bottom). A red Stop and a yellow BLEPS IOC start button invoke ~/bin/bleps_IOC_stop.sh / ~/bin/bleps_IOC.sh in a new gnome-terminal tab on the calling host, so operators can recycle the IOC without leaving the MEDM screen.

Temperature trip limits are high setpoints (a fault is raised when the reading rises above the setpoint); flow trip limits are low setpoints (a fault is raised when the reading falls below the setpoint). The top-row status latches (A_FAULT_EXISTS, A_TRIP_EXISTS, WARNING_EXISTS), the shutter closed-status inputs (BIV_CLOSED, FES_CLOSED, SBS_CLOSED) and the gate-valve limit switches (GVx_OPENED_LS / GVx_CLOSED_LS) are documented under the Faults, Inputs and Outputs tables below.

Full caQtDM panel

The support-supplied bleps_all.ui screen (see figure below) surfaces every BLEPS channel: shutters, per-cause gate-valve fault flags, ion pumps and gauges, vacuum sections, flows, temperatures, and the trip / fault / warning FIFOs (10-entry history with timestamps). It is the diagnostics interface — use it to identify the specific channel that latched a warning and to acknowledge / reset faults that the MEDM buttons don’t cover.

Launch it with the wrapper shipped by the IOC:

/net/s2dserv/xorApps/epics/synApps_6_3/ioc/2bmBLEPS/start_caQtDM_2bmBLEPS

The wrapper exports P=2bmBLEPS: as the UI macro and opens bleps_all.ui by default. Optional positional arguments:

  • first argument: alternate .ui filename (jumps directly to a sub-panel — e.g. bleps_top.ui for the top-level index).

  • second argument: macro string override (defaults to P=2bmBLEPS:).

BLEPS full operator panel (caQtDM, bleps_all.ui)

The figure above shows the panel with the same beamline snapshot as the MEDM summary. Notable groups, left to right:

Shutters (top-left). Beamline Iso, Front End, Station B — each with a state indicator, a Failed to Close alarm indicator, and explicit Close / Open command buttons that write to BIV_PERMIT / FES_PERMIT / SBS_PERMIT.

Gate Valves (below Shutters). One column per GV1 / GV2 / GV3 listing every per-cause fault the PLC tracks (Fault, No Switch, Opened Switch, Closed Switch, Both Switch, Fail to Open / Fully Open, Fail to Close / Fully Close, Beam Exposure) plus Close / Open command buttons wired to the GVx_EPICS_CLOSE / GVx_EPICS_OPEN PVs.

Flows (centre). Eight water-flow tiles, each with the current reading, the trip-floor setpoint, and the scaling factor (raw counts → gpm calibration).

Temps (centre-right). Three M1 mirror-tank thermocouples, each with the current value, trip-high setpoint, and an Over Range indicator.

Ion Pumps / Ion Gauges (top-right). One row per channel with independent Status (device health) and Warn (latched warning) indicators. In the screenshot the four odd-numbered gauges (IG1 / IG3 / IG5 / IG7) show red on both columns — the same pattern surfaced on the MEDM summary.

Vac. Sections (right). Seven vacuum-section trip indicators (VS1..``VS7``), all green in the screenshot.

Trip / Fault / Warning Stacks (bottom). 10-entry FIFOs of recent events with fault number, timestamp, and date. Reset Trips and Reset Faults buttons at the top of the Trip and Fault stacks are the caQtDM equivalents of the MEDM summary’s message buttons. There is no dedicated Reset Warnings button — the Warning stack drains as its underlying conditions clear (or via the physical BLEPS panel button).

BLEPS PV inventory (2-BM)

The Excel transfer table that defines the 2-BM BLEPS PLC tag set contains one worksheet per logical class of signals (FIFOs, Faults, Trips, Warnings, Info, Flows, Temps, Inputs, Outputs, Display, EPICS_Inputs). Each row has a Used flag that marks whether the row is in the deployed configuration; the subsections below reproduce only the rows currently in use at 2-BM and give the two fields needed to address each one over Channel Access:

  • EPICS Ethernet Tag — the controller-side tag that the PLC publishes on the EtherNet/IP-to-EPICS gateway.

  • Short Description — the human-readable label the PLC team attached to each row.

Source of truth is the Excel master (BLEPS EPICS Transfer Table Master 2BM.xls), itself part of the wider 2-BM BLEPS document set on Box (see the Box link in the 2-BM implementation section above). The full PV name on the EPICS gateway is the Base Name + PV Name template BL:$(xx)$(yy):<base name in caps>, which is also in the master Excel.
